Your gift will not only help neglected and abused dogs and cats of Asia, but it will also help all the animals who depend on Soi Dog for their survival.
Johnny was dumped by his owner. A companion animal like him cannot survive on the streets.
Abandoning a pet is an undeniably cruel thing to do. It not only puts the animal in very real danger, but it also causes them significant stress and anxiety.
During this time of crisis, Soi Dog is tragically being called upon more and more to pick up the pieces for abandoned pets. We cannot leave vulnerable pets out there, scared and alone. They simply don’t know how to survive. And they shouldn’t have to try.
Are you able to please give a gift for discarded animals like Johnny during this uncertain and troubling time? His story is heartbreaking. But as you will read, justice was thankfully served for dear Johnny.
There has been a big increase in the number of unwanted pets arriving at the Soi Dog shelter over recent months. More than ever during the ongoing Covid-19 crisis, unloved animals like Johnny are relying on caring people like you to get the safety, shelter, attention and love they need. The alternative is unthinkable.
To cope with the rising number of animals, we must increase food and medical supplies, employ more carers, and create additional space to accommodate and exercise these helpless dogs.
For Johnny who has no one else, and many more like him, will you please give a one-off or monthly gift? Together we can help them recover and eventually, to find joy again.
This video shows Johnny's abandonment at the Soi Dog shelter.
One morning, a young pup named Johnny Cash was dumped in the pouring rain outside the Soi Dog shelter. The man who did the heinous act is a long-term expat living in Phuket. We cannot reveal his name, so we will call him Mr R.
Little Johnny must have thought he was going for a walk. He jumped out the car when he was called to do so. Little did he know that Mr R would then drive off, never to return. The loyal companion ran after the car, putting himself at risk of being hit by oncoming traffic. Poor Johnny must have been so confused.
Fortunately, a Soi Dog staff member saw Johnny in his state of disarray and brought him straight to the shelter.
The whole deed was captured on camera, and we immediately reported the crime to the police. Mr R was located and then charged under The Cruelty Prevention and Welfare of Animal Act. He pleaded guilty and was fined 2,000 THB (approximately 65 USD), and now has a criminal record in Thailand.
Whilst the fine is meagre to someone like Mr R, this successful conviction is a big step in the right direction for animal welfare in Thailand. And we are so encouraged that the police pursued this case and justice was served for Johnny. So many other individuals never get their comeuppance for the terrible things they do to animals. We hope this is a sign that the tides are turning for animals in Thailand.
When animal lovers like you support Soi Dog, you not only directly help animals like Johnny, but you enable us to advocate for them and push for real change. And this is so critical if we are to create a future without animal suffering in Asia.
For now, Johnny is safe at Soi Dog. But he belongs, like all dogs, with a loving family. Will you please help us take care of him and the many more abandoned dogs until that day comes? If you can, please donate today and help unloved dogs find joy again. Thank you for your compassion.
Thankfully, Johnny is now safe at the Soi Dog shelter.
